#36: Your Ownership: What to Know About the Equity in Your Business

Objective: To Help You Place a Value on Your Family Business
Many owners, family members, and executives do not know the fundamentals, concepts, terms, and valuation criteria to place a dollar value on the ownership in their family business.

This Resource Report, through an actual case study, shows you how to calculate and use these values: Book Value, Market Value, Dividend-Paying Value, Replacement Value, Multiple of Sales Value, and the EBIT Value.

We start with an actual company, its initial capitalization, and then present the valuation calculations as the company grows. You learn how to project a company’s earnings and then to value those earnings in today’s dollars for a total value on the company. We discuss the Rate of Return components and give you Present Value Tables so you can determine a value for your own company.

You can use all of the values in this Report when starting or valuing your own business…selling or buying a business…giving stock options to key executives…effecting a buy-sell agreement with other owners…buying out a minority owner or partner…transferring ownership to family members…and evaluating investment opportunities in publicly held companies.

Included are discussions on Cash Flow, Capitalization Rate, Discounted Earnings, and Present Value Analysis.

Applications: The concepts discussed in this Report apply to all types of business entities, including sole proprietorship, partnerships, C and S corporations, and limited liability companies.
